Assistant Chief Building Official

The Assistant Chief Building Official is a supervisory level classification within the Public Works Department and is responsible for planning, organizing, and directing the work activities of building inspection and contract staff. The incumbent is responsible for direct and indirect supervision over professional and technical support staff. Additionally, the individual will assist with formulating policies, establishing goals for the division, supervising staff, and administering the budget. Duties Plans, coordinates, reviews, and participates in the work of professional and technical staff; oversees and participates in the day-to-day operations of building inspection; provides interpretation and decisions on applicable codes, rules, regulations, and technical problems of enforcement; monitors plan check flow; performs plans review for complex projects; coordinates activities with other divisions, City departments, outside agencies, contract service providers, and organizations; assists in the development, implementation, and maintenance of division goals, objectives, policies, and procedures; reviews and evaluates work methods and procedures for improving organizational performance and meeting division goals; assists in ensuring that goals are achieved. Prepares and coordinates reports and presentations on current building issues for City Council, community groups, and regulatory agencies; monitors and keeps informed of current trends in the field of building inspection and plan checking, including legislation, court rulings and professional practices, and techniques; evaluates their impact and recommends changes to policies and procedures accordingly; participates and trains employees in conducting field inspections of complex building construction, structural, mechanical, plumbing, and electrical installations; responds to complex and difficult inquiries and requests; represents the Division with other City divisions and departments, other agencies, civic groups, and the public. Experience Upon hire, possession of a valid Class C California driver's license; Within one year of hire, possession of International Code Council ICC Certified Building Official Certificate. Possession of a Council of American Building Officials CABO Building Official Certificate is acceptable. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
